Sciatica is the name given to pain that results from the irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve.
When the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, it can cause pain, numbness and sometimes weakness in the leg and low back.
The pain can be quite severe but usually sciatica results in increased pain in the buttocks and legs rather than back pain.
